Excerpt from Charles Jones' Log Book:

On July 27, 2009, at approx. 2300 hrs, I was contacted by the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office regarding a 41 yr. old developmentally delayed adult with the mental capacity of a 8 yr. old with medical issues lost at the Fox Grove Fishing Access.

I arrived on scene and was advised the MP was last seen at 1830 hrs at the bathroom and his family left him while they went canoeing in the river.  They returned and found he was missing at 2030 hrs.

Investigating agency Stanislaus County S/O was called.  They requested assistance from the local rural fire department for a ground search.  Air support from there own agency and local Air Med was  called to assist.  The ground crew located clothing hidden 50 yrds from the water in some brush that the family ID’d as the MP’s.

Thirty minuets before my arrival Modesto PD used a patrol dog with no success.

A bag of clothes was collected had been handled by several people and was currently sitting on the hood of a running patrol unit. The people who handled the clothing was unknown.  When examining the articles I found socks shoved up into the shoes that appeared not to be handled.  This was going to be my scent article, it was collected.

The clothes were located approx 50 yards from the water edge hidden in dense brush.  I placed the article off the trail near the water and scented the BH at 2400 hrs.

The BH had positive trailing behavior and walked into the water and immediately made a U turn and came out.  He followed a dense wooded foot path approximately 50 yards to where the clothes where hidden. He continued trailing along the path and at one time went back to the waters edge along the path.  The wooded area was so thick we could not get through it or see through it.

He continued along the foot path for 100 yrds.  We came out into a picnic area that over looked the river channel.  The BH trailed to the bathroom door and circled the bathroom.

I took the BH to the starting point believing we ran a reverse trail.  The scent article was still in place. The BH on his own hit the scent article and immediately ran back into the water. He went to the right for 20 feet and made an aggressive return and went another 30 feet the then left.  The entire time he was chest deep in the water.  We could not travel either direction on the shore line.  The BH was determined to keep going and for his safety and ours, he was pulled from the water.

The water rescue boat was activated at 0800 hrs on 7/28/09 and the MP was located 10’ from where we terminated our search.  The MP was located in a floatation life vest deceased caught up in the under brush.
